5. Implementation Strategy Study

  • The Crystal City/Potomac Yard Corridor Interim Improvement Project Summary. This 11-page report from December 2005 is a technical memorandum that outlines the phased service improvements in the corridor, station stops and amenities, project development and implementation, estimated capital and operating costs, and what steps will be taken next in the project.

  • The Crystal City/Potomac Yard Transit Improvement Project Environmental Scan. This 17-page report from November 2005 is a technical memorandum that documents potential impacts to the study area as a result of the proposed transit system. The environmental scan looks at soils, air quality, noise and vibration, water resources, protected species and critical habitats, environmental justice, parklands, hazardous and contaminated materials, neighborhood and community impacts, property acquisition and displacement, historic and cultural resources, safety and security, and energy consumption.

  • The Crystal City/Potomac Yard Transit Connection. This community newsletter from Spring 2005 was distributed to members of the local community in Alexandria and Arlington. The newsletter features articles on the purpose of and need for transit improvements in the corridor, the project implementation plan, and operational characteristics of state-of-the-art transit systems.

6. Alternatives Analysis

  • The Crystal City/Potomac Yard Corridor Transit Alternatives Analysis Final Report (see links below). This March 2003 report, published by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, contains an overview of the project and study area and explores the project's purpose and need, alternative transit technologies, potential maintenance facilities, and investment strategies. Central to the document are the identification of evaluation criteria, an analysis of the alternatives based on that criteria, and study recommendations. Because of the large size of the Alternatives Analysis, the document has been split here into five separate PDFs:

    - Contents, Executive Summary, Sections 1-4
    - Sections 5-9
    - Sections 10-11
    - Appendices A-F
    - Appendices G-L

7. Other Studies

  • A related document, the Crystal City Metrorail Station Access Study final report, is also available. Prepared by Arlington County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) in 2002, the study makes recommendations for improvements to the Crystal City Metro Station, including station entrances, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and internal station enhancements. A slide presentation of the study can also be downloaded.
